The Avocado Producers and Exporting Packers Association of Michoacán (APEAM) informed that sales of this fruit in the United States increased by 34% compared to last year.
Alejandro del Toro, President of APEAM said “of the projection we had, a 10% of increase for this year, about 220,000 tons that we sent last year, but we surprisingly exceeded it with more than 290,000 tons.
He explained that thanks to this increase in the sales volume, the domestic market did not saturate, which created better prospects.
Regarding the economic crisis he mentioned that it impacted the prices, they were not as good as they expected, but the volume allowed to open the market “the product that before was bought for 1.60 dollars per kilogram decreased to 1.40 dollars”
About 5 thousand producers were benefited. He informed that there are 50 thousand hectares of avocado that are included in the exports program to the United States, with the possibility of increasing that by 4 thousand hectares.
APEAM was founded in 1997 and nowadays it’s integrated by 29 exporting packing companies which have their main markets in New York, Chicago and southern Texas.
