Alberto Cardenas Jimenez had a reunion with his counterparts of Chile and New Zealand. Food safety matters are a key to increase the commercial relationships between countries.

The Secretary of Agriculture, Alberto Cardenas Jimenez had meetings with his counterparts in Chile and New Zealand, Marigen Hornkohl Venegas and Murray Sherwin respectively, to whom he informed that during this economic world crisis, the Mexican agricultural sector grew of 3.4 per cent in 2008 and 1.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2009.

"The trends are positive so that this primary sector of the Mexican Economy will contribute positive results again at the conclusion of the second quarter of the year ", mentioned the Secretary Alberto Cardenas Jimenez.
The government of Chile is interested in increasing its exports of fruits and at the same time it requires to increase its purchases of meat products from Mexico.

Mexico is one of the principal commercial partners of Chile in the region. This South American country has become the second most important commercial partner of Mexico worldwide (the 13th buyer and the 13th supplier), after Brazil.

The Mexico-Chile commercial relations are ruled by the Free Trade Agreement that both countries signed, which came into full force in August 1999. During the last five years, the trade between both countries has increased at an annual growth rate of 9.2 per cent.

During the meeting with the head of the SAGARPA, Alberto Cardenas Jimenez, with the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of New Zealand, Murray Sherwin, it was outlined that the economic, commercial and scientific-technological relationships in the agricultural sector of both countries, was characterized by the increasing interest of the businessmen of that country to promote their business and marketing of their products in our country.

The civil servants of New Zealand showed special interest to know the support policies that the government of President Felipe Calderon has implemented to benefit small ranchers of sheep, goats, milk and bee-keepers.
Also there were discussions of food safety, commercial agreements and positions of both countries at international forums.
